"Victory Road"

Who played the arcade version of this "Ikari Warriors" sequel? Who loved it? I loved it, chiefly for the hilarious sound design. The death screams of the monsters were piercing, maddening, ultimately stupefying:

I went crazy those Saturday afternoons of my misspent Anchorage youth, dropping quarter after quarter into the "Victory Road" machine at the Space Station out on Spenard. I was desperate to make sense of the distorted taunt from (presumably) the end boss of the game, whom I never did get to fight:

"Hah! Show some guts! You can't escape me! Come get me if you can! MUAH, HA HA HA!!"

    This game SUCKED.

    Biggest disappointment of my life!!!!

I was a MEGA Ikari Warriors NUT in the '80s!

When this thing came out, I went nuts. Finally played it one day--and was devastated by it's utter supreme awfulness!

Luckily, Data East released HEAVY BARREL around the same time, which proudly took up the mantle that SNK dropped...or rather tossed out the window.

Ikari III did little to make up for this travesty.

At least the NES version has that crazy "WELCOME!" voice sample when you enter the shop which a few friends of mine still quote to this day.
